The PPP of Demo Class (Open Class)

Kelly's Open Class

Five years ago I did a demo class (open class) for a teaching job.  I was sweating a lot because I was so scared of making mistakes.  I was so happy to finish the demo class.  I could have done it better but I just lose it.  I was lucky to get hired.  After that incident and after many demo classes for parents, teachers and sometimes for visiting teachers from other schools, I learned something and I wanted to share it here.  I call it the PPP of Open Class.

Preparation

Preparation is the key to a good demo class or open class but sometimes preparation could get wrong.  Sometimes we are preparing for the wrong class or the wrong students.  So preparation must start with getting the information of the class where you want to do an open class or demo class and the best person to ask is the advisory teacher of that class.  Few weeks ago I wrote an article about 10 Things to Consider before Writing a Lesson Plan could be a great help on the preparation.

Practice

Practice makes perfect.  The rule always works even with those experienced teachers.  Practice helps you familiarize your lesson.  It is important that the teacher knows every activities and what is next to it before teaching.  A good way to practice is to try the lesson to a similar class to see how the activities works and it is also good to have a friend who can listen and give a comment or can be your good critic.

Presentation

This is the final stage.  The most critical one.  This is where you will be evaluated by your supervisor and sometimes the parents.  There are things that needs to be remembered:  The teacher must not allow himself/herself to entertain negative stimuli.  So the best thing to do that is not to look at those evaluators.  Focus yourself on your lesson and teach what you’ve prepared and practiced to your students. Focus your attention on your lesson and the students.  Secondly, keep in mind that you already prepared everything, so it is the right time to have self confidence.

This PPP of Open Class (Demo Class) helps me a lot while doing demo class for parents, visitors and teachers.  I hope this will help you too.
