There are many skills that a teacher must have. I wish I can have all of them but since I am not a machine I will just try to learn the most useful skills that help enhance my teaching. Since I am teaching in the kindergarten, these are the skills that I think a teacher of these little ones must learn.
Drawing. I have found out in my experience that preschoolers are more attracted to colorful drawings than pictures. I know the students like pictures but I wanted to know which kind of pictures. So I experiment at school and brought with me 8×11 size full colored picture of a boy and 8×11 size full colored drawing of a boy. I ask my students during my class which picture they like best and to my surprise they like the drawing. I did the same thing on my other classes and got the same answers. I would advise that if you are planning to teach in the kindergarten you must learn to draw. You will like it.
Music. Be able to sing or play music instrument/s is quite important in teaching kindergarten. Children enjoy music more than the adults. You can incorporate music to almost every subjects or theme.
Good Communication Skill. I’m not talking about communication skills during classes. Teaching in kindergarten requires constant communication with the parents. Communication skill is very vital in the relationship between the school and the parents.
Computer Skill. Knowing how to use software such as MS Office-Powerpoint or Mac’s Keynote both are good for presentation is very helpful in teaching. It will create an interactive presentation and attract children’s attention.
Creativity. I consider this skill as the best skill for teacher. A creative teacher knows how to adapt to any situations, make do with what is available. Being able to know those things creates no limits of fun and learning.
