I noticed last week that my students were less motivated in my class. I decided to have a classroom break. Instead of having a class in the classroom, I decided to have it on the playground. Instead of following our text book, I planned to teach them how to prepare a dessert.
There are things that I need to consider when having a class outside the classroom.
- Safety – This is the primary responsibility of the teacher. Since the location of my class still in the school but on the playground, I have to make sure that all the toys are stored in the proper place. I have to make sure that the place is safe.
- Assistance – There is a need of assistance in having a class outside. The number of assistants depends upon the number of students. I would say 1 teacher/teaching assistant per 10 students.
- Set the materials before moving the students from their classroom to the new location. This would prevent boredom of the students while watching their teachers setting the materials. The teacher also should consider if the students need chairs.
- Lastly, after the class be sure that all the chairs and tables are return to the proper place. Clean the place before leaving.
The class went well and I think the students were so happy during the class. I felt good in having a class outside the classroom even just on our playground.
